Mutt Media | The Daily Bone 6.17.09 Facebook says "Claim your Username!"

06.17.2009

Happy Hump Day – It’s Wednesday :)

facebook

On June 13th, Facebook launched it’s newest toy – the opportunity for users to claim their own recognizable domain name. So now, instead of the generic url address of http://www.facebook.com/home.php, which leaves you virtually unidentifiable, you can – in the spirit of the Gold Rush 100+ years ago – claim your unique identity and easy to convey domain name (i.e., http://www.facebook.com/topeyelidsurgeon). Ok…that was a plug for one of my favorite clients ;)

Anyway, registration began at midnight on 6/13 and according to Bloomberg News about 1 million people staked their claim within the first hour alone.

It’s really easy. Since prior to 6/13 when you logged onto your account you probably have seen a message alerting you to this new feature. It’s easy to get if you haven’t done this already. Just visit http://facebook.com/username and follow your nose.

If you have a Page on Facebook with less than 1000 fans, this feature will not be available to you just yet; you’ll have to wait until June 28th when this limitation will be lifted.

To get all of the answers to your questions, just click on this link. Mutt Media will take you there!

Oh, and it would be nice to become a fan while your out there looking around if you haven’t already. We’ve got a link to make this really easy. Just look to your right under the “Blogroll” header…and click away!

Mutt Media | The Daily Bone 6.8.09 How much is too much on Facebook?

06.08.2009

facebookOver the weekend I read about a woman who was murdered back in March named Caroline Wimmer. Ms. Wimmer was unfortunately strangled with the cord of a hair dryer in her home on Staten Island. One of the EMT’s who responded to the call was a retired NYPD Detective named Mark Musarella.

Musarella, according to the accounts I’ve read, had a stellar record while serving on the NYPD, logging a few downright heroic deeds such as saving a man from a burning car and helping to rescue a mother and daughter who had fallen from a boat that had capsized (NY POST Friday, June 5, 2009).

Musarella is claiming that the posting to Facebook was accidental and that the photo inadvertantly got uploaded with several others.

The question remains, why would an Emergency Medical Technician take a photo with his cell phone while performing his duties? Why would he need or want this image for personal use? Beside being pretty macabre, I believe this is a breach of ethics. The upload to Facebook notwithstanding this is something that he should probably be disciplined for on a professional level. According the story in the Post, while the photo was on his account for only “Friends” to see (his account is set to “private”), one viewer took offense to it and called the hospital that Musarella worked for (Richmond University Hospital). The hospital fired him and he is now facing charges – he is charged with official misconduct and faces up to a year in prision.

I think about the victim of this terrible crime and the family that she leaves behind. Ravi Batra, the attorney for Wimmer’s family believes that prosecuting Musarella will, “keep society civil”.

Good luck.

Mutt Media | Daily Bone 6.1.09: Iran & the Facebook ban

06.01.2009

Over Memorial Day Weekend I read in my favorite newspaper (as well as other news outlets) that the Iranian government has blocked its citizens from using the Facebook service. Critics of this move attributed it to the upcoming June elections.

Candidate Mir Hossein Mousavi has used Facebook heavily in the past to mobilize young voters for his benefit, much like Obama did with his presidential campaign.

Here’s a video posted on You Tube that tells the story in short…forgive the ad at the end..sometimes these things cannot be helped.

No sooner did I begin drafting this blog then did Iran’s government lift the ban. From all I’ve read, this seems to be a pretty common practice; sites are routinely banned both in Iran as well as other extremely Muslim countries and in China too. When a website’s content runs in contradiction to the fundamental religious philosophies of a nation, these bans are commonplace.

Let’s feel thankful that we live in a country that allows and encourages free speech and opposing views.

9. While you do want to be stringent about monitoring your social networking sites for undesirable photos and questionable alliances, we should never forget what they are for – networking! By all means, use your contacts. Ask them to post a link about you. Your audience will increase exponentially (see earlier post and the viral networking Faberge illustration).

Provide your friends with a link to your Blog (you should set this up asap as we discussed earlier this month – see Tip #4). There are several sites that are really user-friendly including WordPress and Blogger that make it very easy for you to set this up.

Make sure your posts are relevant and blog often. If people find you interesting, they will come back and voila! You can amass a following and get viral marketing to work for you. Remember, fresh and interesting content is the most important thing! And what’s more interesting than you?

Mutt Media | Daily Bone 5.26.09 Top 10 Tips for marketing yourself online Tip #8 Poll Your Friends

05.26.2009

Mutt Media Tip #8

Another Tip from Mutt Media NY

Now that you had a nice long Memorial Day weekend and are totally rested, it’s time to give your job search a shot in the arm. Our Top 10 Tips continue….

8. Poll your friends. Sometimes we work on our Résumé, Blog or Personal Statement so closely we lose our objectivity. Circulate your work to those you respect and trust for a fresh perspective. In today’s online world, this is an easy task! We are all connected in the online community and people are generally all too happy to help. Typos and omissions are so common, so make sure you spell-check and don’t be afraid of your word processor’s toolbox! Utilize your thesaurus and use words that show that you are a person who generates profits and contributes to your employer’s bottom line.

Words like “implemented (some innovative, life-altering policy or procedure)”, “reduced (expenses)”, “increased (profits)”, “streamlined” etc. tell a prospective employer that you are an Agent of Change and can make a valuable contribution to their organization.

Mutt Media | The Daily Bone 5.15.09 | 10 Tips For Marketing Yourself Online – Tip #3: Format your résumé properly

Mutt Media Tip #3

Another Tip from Mutt Media NY

3. When creating your résumé, be mindful that not everyone is working off of the same software you are. What looks perfect on your screen or when you print at home, may come out quite different if your prospective employer has an older version of the same software or a different software altogether.

You’ve seen these files – margins are wrong, indents are off and the overall alignment just doesn’t look right. Sometimes you can even lose your font! Your best bet is to save the file in both a .DOC format as well as a .PDF. PDF documents cannot be altered after they are saved and will come out just the way you intended. If you absolutely must save your document in .DOC (Word) format, use a universally accepted font such as Ariel, Helvetica or Times New Roman. This will ensure a higher likelihood of compatibility once your document is received.

Needless to say (I hope!), make sure you spell check your document and use proper and consistent punctuation throughout. Don’t blow it before you even get the interview!

Mutt Media | The Daily Bone 5.14.09 10 Tips For Marketing Yourself Online – Tip #2: Create a New Email Account

05.14.2009

Mutt Media Tip #2

Another Tip from Mutt Media NY

2. Create a new email address specifically for your job search. Do away with addresses like Sexygirl222@xxx.com or anything too cutesy or infantile. This is a professional contact address and your email address may reveal a side of you that is not appropriate. This will only work to your disadvantage. Stick to your name, which is unique and will assist in people remembering who you are. If you have a common name like Smith, you may consider selecting something catchy and smart that reflects the business you are in or that will make an impression (consider perfectassistant@xxx.com or greathire@xxx.com).

You can get a new email account for free in a wide variety of places, such as gmail or aol, so what are you waiting for? Start reshaping your online image and put forth the best YOU possible!
