Mutt Media | Daily Bone 10.26.09 Teens and how they are contributing creative content online

10.26.2009

According to a 2005 study conducted by the Pew Internet and American Life project (Lenhardt & Madden,2005), more than one-half of all American teens—and 57 percent of teens who use the Internet—could be considered media creators.

For the purpose of the study, a media creator is someone who created a blog or webpage ,posted original artwork, photography, stories or videos online or remixed online content into their own new creations. Most have done two or more of these activities. One-third of teens share what they create online with others, 22 percent have their own websites, 19 percent blog, and 19 percent remix online content…some interesting statistics…

Here’s a piece that my son made awhile back that at last count had almost 90,000 hits on YouTube. Go figure. Topic? Call of Duty and his Top 10 Weapons. Kids these days!

Mutt Media | The Daily Bone 9.14.09 at 7AM top site: Yahoo Blog: Kanye Loses It at the VMA Awards

Top web site visit as of 7AM according To Alexa.com

When I went to sleep last night I plugged my phone into the charger and did a last check of my emails.

I saw a flurry of Facebook updates from friends who suddenly seemed really angry at Kanye West. No, I mean really angry. People calling him names and expressing their disbelief at his actions at the VMA’s (Video Music Awards).

I had spent the day working and the night watching True Blood, Hung and Entourage so I had no idea what the %$#%^&* was going on. So I did what any curious/lazy person would do at that moment. I updated my Facebook status to read, “what happened today? fill me in on the Kanye thing” (or words to that affect. Within minutes a friend sent me a YouTube clip. [Thank you :) ].

This is amazing to me. Amazing that Kanye was so rude and amazing that this was like the shot heard ’round the world.

I had the clip up here on this post but it’s been removed from YouTube by Viacom and AP.

Here’s the link to the most popular site according to the Alexa toolbar. He has subsequently apologized.

Have a nice day :)

Got to give credit for one of my virtual classmates (Vanessa) at the New School for posting this video to our class blog and calling my attention to it.

This cartoon was posted on You Tube and is a funny commentary on all of the current chatter surrounding social networking, micro-blogging and the like.

Hope you enjoy it. Post your comments! Thanks, Vanessa :)

Mutt Media | The Daily Bone 8.20.09 kamouya1@yahoo.com is the "anonymous" insulting, defaming blogger

08.20.2009
kamouya1@yahoo.com is the "anonymous" insulting, defaming blogger

kamouya1@yahoo.com is the "anonymous" insulting, defaming blogger

Yesterday Liskula Cohen won her court battle to unveil the identity of the offensive Blogger responsible for the “Skanks in NYC” blog in which Cohen was the sole subject.

I, for one, applaud this ruling as I feel strongly that people should not be allowed to hide behind a cloak of anonymity to make negative, offensive and hurtful statements – about anything. Whether you are ranting about an Obama policy, your unfair boss or the hit your stock portfolio just took, I say stand up and, if you can’t (or won’t) take on the responsibility that comes along with your rant – then sit down and shut up.

This may seem like a harsh viewpoint (and maybe it is) but I am not a believer in stirring up the pot and leaving a big old mess for others to deal with. If you feel that you have a valid viewpoint that is worth sharing and you can take the time to say it, then sign your name to it.

It is completely irresponsible and cowardly to throw out your opinions without taking on the fallout they may create. I believe we should all be able to broadcast our opinions – that is what free speech is all about but hiding behind a cloak of anonymity absolutely removes the validity of your viewpoint.

Ok. So preachy portion of today’s blog behind us, I can now comment about what little we know about kamouya1@yahoo.com. She is a woman who was, according to Cohen, nothing more than a passing acquaintence. What then, did the model do to so offend?

Cohen appeared on Good Morning America. So she now knows the identity and claims that she forgives her but will, nevertheless, be filing a civil defamation suit.

I, for one was shocked to find out that this blogger was another woman who would resort to attacking her “friend” by claiming that she was dirty, skanky and sexually promiscuous. Disgusting!

Mutt Media will be following this story as it progresses so stay tuned to see how and if this lawsuit materializes and the eventual outcome.

Mutt Media | The Daily Bone 8.18.09 Judge rules Google must give up identity of "anonymous" blogger

08.18.2009
Google must give up identity of blogger who posted defamatory remarks about model Liskula Cohen

Google must give up identity of blogger who posted defamatory remarks about model Liskula Cohen

Once upon a (recent) time, there was a blog site on Blogger.com (Google-owned) called “Skanks in NYC”. Isn’t that charming?

According to Timesonline.com, the blogger posted remarks such as the following:

“I would have to say the first-place award for ‘Skankiest in NYC’ would have to go to Liskula Gentile Cohen,” the blogger “Anonymous” wrote in one posting. The blog, since removed, ridiculed the former Australian Vogue covergirl as a “40-something” who “may have been hot 10 years ago”, when she was actually 36.

Justice Joan Madden rejected the blogger’s claim that the blogs “serve as a modern-day forum for conveying personal opinions, including invective and ranting”, and should not be treated as factual assertions.

The model was looking forward last night to discovering the identity of the alleged acquaintance who insulted her. “Everybody is waiting to see who this coward is,” Steven Wagner, her lawyer, said.

Andrew Pederson, a Google spokesman, said: “We sympathise with anyone who may be the victim of cyberbullying. We also take great care to respect privacy concerns and will only provide information about a user in response to a subpoena or other court order.” (author: James Bone)

This is not the first time Cohen has been in the news for something conflict-related. A couple of years back while at the Hudson Hotel, she got into an argument with a guy who took a drink off of her table. After throwing a drink at him, he hit her in the face with a bottle of vodka, causing her to get over 40 stitches and, according to her account at the time, effectively end her modeling career.

How do these scrapes with others keep ending up in the newspaper and why does trouble seem to find her? I haven’t a clue. But I do know this: there is no guarantee of anonymity on the internet!!!!

Very soon this blogger will be forced out from the shadows and his/her identity will be known. Soon after that, no doubt Cohen will file a defamation lawsuit and will hopefully prevail, sending a strong message to anyone who seeks to publicly defame another.

I applaud this ruling, how about you? Post your thoughts!

Mutt Media Tip #9

Another Tip from Mutt Media NY

Another Tip from Mutt Media NY

9. While you do want to be stringent about monitoring your social networking sites for undesirable photos and questionable alliances, we should never forget what they are for – networking! By all means, use your contacts. Ask them to post a link about you. Your audience will increase exponentially (see earlier post and the viral networking Faberge illustration).

Provide your friends with a link to your Blog (you should set this up asap as we discussed earlier this month – see Tip #4). There are several sites that are really user-friendly including WordPress and Blogger that make it very easy for you to set this up.

Make sure your posts are relevant and blog often. If people find you interesting, they will come back and voila! You can amass a following and get viral marketing to work for you. Remember, fresh and interesting content is the most important thing! And what’s more interesting than you?

Mutt Media | Daily Bone 5.19.09 Top 10 Tips for marketing yourself online. Tip #5: Subscribe to News Feeds (RSS)!

05.19.2009
Another Tip from Mutt Media NY

Another Tip from Mutt Media NY

5. Subscribe to RSS feeds in your professional field. This will keep you on top of the latest trends, articles and expose you to contacts you didn’t have before.

This is a free service that brings the entire web to your personal computer. Instead of searching out your favorite blogs and news feeds, they will be fed directly into your Reader Account and at your fingertips when you need them. You will be surprised how many people are out there sharing ideas, bartering and feeding off of the World Wide Web of creativity.

You will find an option to subscribe to an RSS feed on virtually all Blogs that you visit. Now that I’ve brought this up, you will notice and look for them even more, right?

A short primer on RSS or, as they are often called, Web Feeds.

RSS (Real Simple Syndication) is a technology that enables web browsers to read content as text. What does this mean for the blogger? Well, that his content will be more easily picked up by search engines and easier to find by the rest of us.

How is an RSS Feed useful? Well, I’ll use myself as an example….My interests (to name a few) are online media, fashion, gardening, and movies. In the online world, lots of people are blogging, but let’s say I’ve found a few that give me great insights and information written in a style that I like. Rather than having to visit each site individually and hope they’ve posted something new, I can subscribe to their feed and whenever they provide new content, it will be delivered straight to my Reader. This way, I can, at my leisure, pop in and read without having to go on a labor-intensive search mission. You can subscribe to as many news feeds as you like; they are only limited by how much news you’d like to get. Gone are the days of bookmarking! All posts will be sent to you within moments.

Think of your News Feed as getting information delivered right to your front door (like a newspaper), only the great thing is that it only contains the news you have expressed an interest in reading! You can log into many of these from any computer so you never have to be completely out of touch, even on vacation. If this option sounds good to you, you’ll want to look for a web-based news feed. Just a few are Google Reader, News Gator and Bloglines.

There are many utilities out there to deliver your news feed right to your computor, too. Some are NetNewsWire (for Mac users), and SharpReader.

So, go forth and subscribe. You can start with Mutt Media! Just click on the tab at the top of this page that says “RSS” after you select and set up your newsreader.

Mutt Media | Daily Bone 5.18.09 | Top 10 Tips for marketing yourself online. Tip #4: Start Blogging!

05.18.2009
Another Tip from Mutt Media NY

Another Tip from Mutt Media NY

Mutt Media Tip #4

4. Start blogging! Create a Blog about your professional life and area of expertise. This can be a great way to reach a wide audience. If your Blog is written correctly Search Engines will pick it up. This can be an extremely beneficial tool in extending your reach to a wider audience and get people talking about you.

Just remember, content is key! Make sure your posts are in your voice, authentic and written by you. Research your material whenever possible and check your facts if you are presenting yourself as some kind of authority on a subject. Give proper credit where due. This applies to all images and authors of other material you may be embellishing upon.

There is nothing wrong with linking to other blogs and websites; in fact, this can help you! The web is built on the premise of many people and their ideas being interwoven, so when applicable, this is a common and useful practice. To ensure your visitors will return to your blog, keep the content fresh, and blog often. Make it easy and enjoyable and your visitors will hopefully share the link and spread the word.

Remember, “If you build it, they will come” (Field of Dreams! – see what I mean by proper credit? I can’t take credit for writing that line!). So build your blog and populate it with content that is relevant. You never know who will read it and recognize your inner genius!

Mutt Media's Daily Bone asks, "How connected are we and to what?" David Horsey comic sheds some light.

05.04.2009
I recently came across the cartoon below in Newsday. Just to properly give credit where credit is due, it was apparantly picked up from the Seattle Post and was created by David Horsey. I think it’s a brilliant illustration of just how plugged in we’ve become but I wanted to share a bit of irony here.
|
Yes, we have become experts at posting our Status Updates on Facebook, Twitter or your social networking platform of choice, but have you noticed just how disconnected we have become from (what I like to call) Life Proper?
|
In my family, it is almost impossible to catch the four of us together where one, two or all of us are not attached to some sort of device. We are out to dinner. We are at the Yankee game. We are at a school concert. Someone is always removed from the moment and distracted by Blackberry, IPhone or just texting a friend. Yes, we may be Tweeting to the world about what we are doing, but are we really “there”? Not really. Not enough in my opinion. This is a commentary on the way the world is changing and how social media has impacted the way our children are growing up, their modes of communication and their interactions with the world around them.
|
Our kids do not communicate the way we did. And they won’t in the future. Look to my future blogs to enlighten you about how far kids are going to shorten, abbreviate otherwise alter their native language. You will be shocked. This goes way beyond ROFL and POS (Rolling On Floor Laughing and Parent Over Shoulder).
|
If you didn’t know those two, we have our work cut out for us. Keep checking back.
